January 17, 1956: Cuthbert Hurd (IBM) letter to Chancellor Allen

On this date Dr. Hurd (IBM) sent a letter to Chancellor Allen seeking a visit to decide whether a Center is feasible and what institution should serve as its host. Hurd uses the name IBM Western Slope Data Processing Center. He sets forth some possible arrangements for discussion as well as some questions. One could intepret this letter as indicating his bent toward UCLA as the host institution.

Possible Arrangements

The Center's primary purpose is instruction and research in data processing as applied to business. Secondary are engineering and science.

Initially, one shift would be available to the host and half of it might be designated for use by other institutions. Hours would expand after a year if usage should expand.

The host institution would appoint a Director of national stature and he, with IBM, would select an Advisory Committee from other schools.

An instructional program would include both undergraduate and graduate courses in data processing, and collateral courses in operations analysis and management science.

Research projects would be fundamental research, non-classified and publishable.

IBM will provide funds for the appointment of a number of Research Assistants and Associates.

Space needs are estimated at 18,000 square feet gross. IBM's ideal would be a separate location with modern contruction available in 1957.
