April 1, 1957: Letter from President Sproul to Chancellor Allen

At the Charter Day celebration, someone made a casual statement to President Sproul about IBM computers, Nos. 604, 650 and 655, that were being acquired in addition to the IBM 705. He is concerned that these additional machines will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and that he and Allen may not have been given authority for their purchase.

The answer was that the IBM 650 was an interim machine made available by IBM without charge. It was installed in a room in the BAE building which until then had been a Statistics Laboratory that was equipped with Monroe and Marchant calculators. The Laboratory was under my supervision and I contributed it to WDPC. Sproul's letter and Allen's reply are here.
