April 1, 1957: Dr. George W. Brown appointed Director

Dr. Brown had been active as a part-time Visiting Professor in the School of Engineering at UCLA for several years. He had acted as a Senior Consultant to WDPC during the period of these negotiations and had been a participant in the November 11, 1956, Conference.

His appointment to the Faculty of the business school and Director of WDPC was first proposed to take effect on July 1, 1957. However, plans for WDPC were moving forward so quickly that Dean Jocoby (business) and Dean Boelter (engineering) changed the appointment date to April 1.

Dr. Brown became the founding Director who set the culture for WDPC. It was a culture of service, service to the user, that was to be the operational hallmark throughout WDPC's history. This culture was largely reponsible for the Center's success in serving the computer needs at UCLA and over 100 Participating Institutions in the Western states during its 10 year life span.
