June 22, 1956: Regents Approval

The Regents approved the establishment of a Western Universities Computing Center on the Los Angeles campus subject to the approval by the General Counsel of the contract with IBM. (Note the use of the old name here and not the new one used in the May 18 minutes.)

In these years, all income from various sources were reported to the Regents. At this same meeting, item (5a) reported a National Science Foundation award:

$123,931 for one year or $999,994 for five years for research by Dr. M. R. Hestenes and C. B. Tompkins on development and modernization of computing facilities.

So, at the same time that the Board of Regents was approving the IBM grant, it was also expanding and modernizing what must have been the SWAC computer facility
