November 4, 1955: Chancellor Allen to UC President Sproul

A letter from Chancellor Allen to UC President Robert Gordon Sproul went out on this date. Apparently Allen had talked with Sproul earlier because the letter starts off "As I have mentioned to you, ..." Allen is proceeding slowly for several reasons:

1. The Center might operate initially at a deficit.

2. General policy on computers on campus is as yet undefined.

3. There is a question about campus location for the IBM 705.

4. IBM is not satisfied that there is space on campus.

5. There is no University precedent for a private concern using a campus facility like IBM wishes to do.

6. IBM has approached Stanford where it was received with enthusiasm.

Chancellor Allen concludes his letter with a statement that a firm proposal should be coming to his (Sproul's) attention in the near future.
