November 13, 1956: Press Release from Office of Public Information

"LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13---Establishment of the world's first university computing center devoted primarily to the study of complicated business management problems was announced here today by representatives of the University of California at Los Angeles and the International Business Machines Corporation."

The announcement was made by President Robert Gordon Sproul, UCLA Chancellor Raymond B. Allen, and IBM President Thomas J. Watson, Jr.

It mentioned that the computer would be housed in its own $750,000 building that will be part of a new multi-million dollar business adminitration building. Twenty colleges and universities had already signified their intention to become participating members. IBM will install the machine, contribute to its operating cost, and make a substantial grant to support research assistants from western schools.
