A DIRECTOR FOR GSM COMPUTER SERVICES

In April, 1977, Dr. Robert Carmichael formally became Director of GSM Computer Services. His appointment was half-time as the Director and half-time as a Lecturer in the School. Thankfully, Bob kept many of his files on GSM computer activities which he has shared with me.

After one month on the job, he made a Report to the Faculty from which one can infer a great deal about what was going on in computing at GSM during these years.

A small staff included a full-time programmer, a key punch operator, and several part-time teaching assistants.

The full-time staff provided some support for the administration of the School with both batch and interactive programs, managed the user charge number accounts with CCN, and maintained the North Node interface with CCN.

The TAs consulted with users, did some teaching in workshops, gave some administrative support to the GSM Dean and Department Chair, and generally provided services to those in need.

Carmichael continued in this role until he stepped down in June 1980 and Dr. Jason Frand became Director of GSM Computer Services.
